MS University Tamilnadu, India
Manonmaniam Sundaranar University was established in 1990, as per Act 31, 1990 by the Government of Tamil Nadu, as a Teaching-cum-Affiliated University. The University has been named after Prof. P. Sundaram Pillai (1855-1897), the Tamil poet literate and renowned late 19th century writer who authored the famous verses of the drama 'MANONMANIAM'. The University caters to the needs of three southern districts in Tamil Nadu viz. Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari. Dr. M. Karunanidhi, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, formally inaugurated the University on 7th September 1990.
The University Grants Commission, New Delhi, an apex higher education body of the Union Government, has accorded its approval for getting financial assistance since 29 March 1994. The University has been accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council of India with five Star status. The University Act authorizes the functioning DDCE outside the University jurisdiction and the courses offered through this mode are recognized by respective council.
About eighty thousand students study in the various university departments and its eighty affiliated colleges, which include one constituent and government college. The courses and research programs offered by Manonmaniam Sundaranar University have been carefully chosen after considering the contemporary needs of the region.
MS UNIVERSITY is situated at Tirunelveli (Latitude 8.44 and longitude 77.44) a city of about 6 lakhs population. The campus is situated in a land area of 546.98 acres at Abishekapati on the outskirts of Tirunelveli, 4 kms. from the municipal limits on the Tirunelveli-Tenkasi highway. Besides this, the University has in its possession 179.89 acres of land in Sivalaperi village, Tirunelveli.
